Czech Geological Survey - Geofond
Czech Geological Survey-Geofond is a state funded organization established by the Ministry of the Environment.
Its main purpose is the execution of the functions of the state geological survey (collection, processing and provision of information related to the geological structure, geological hazards, protection and utilization of mineral and grounwater resources) within the territory of the Czech Republic, according to § 17 of Act No. 62/1988 on Geological Works, as amended (the Geological Act).
Main Statutory Duties of CGS-Geofond
Collection and provision of information related to:
- the geological structure of the state territory
- geohazards (incl. impacts of mine workings)
- the protection and utilization of mineral and groundwater resources
Tasks stipulated by law and the respective state administrative:
- §§ 7, 12 and 13 of the Geological Works Act No. 62/1988 Coll., as amended
- §§ 8, 15 and 35 of the Protection and Utilization of Mineral Resources Act No. 44/1988 Coll., as amended
- by the Agreement on the use of Geofond CR (File No. M/140/1997) between the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Industry and Trade
Maintenance of a specialized public archive of the state geological survey:
- §§ 51 and 52 of the Archival and Filing Services Act No. 499/2004 Coll.
Processing of statistical reports for government ministries:
- authorized by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, within the scope of the statistical enquiry programme under § 10 of the State Statistical Service Act No. 89/1995 Coll., as amended.
Collection, processing and storage of geological documentation and the results of geological works carried out by individuals and legal entities in the territory of the Czech Republic for the purpose of:
- state and public use
- environmental management and protection
- registering mineral resources
- mining operation supervision
- urban planning
- establishing a national mineral policy and the utilization of national mineral resources
- developing exploration strategies for selected minerals
- scientific needs
Planning, execution and evaluation of geological works on behalf of the state
Compilation of assessments and reviews concerning environmental geofactors and specific geological features
Development and maintenance of a unified information system within the state geological service and the continuous updating of its databases
Processing of Czech geological documents:
- for use in national and international information systems
Collaboration with foreign institutions:
- on international research programmes and projects
- on projects under the auspices of the foreign assistance programme the Czech Republic
Collaboration with universities, scientific institutes and other organizations:
- in educating experts
- raising public awareness of relevant geological processes and related environmental issues
