Mineral Commodity Summaries of the Czech Republic

The yearbook, Mineral of the Czech Republic, has been published since 1992 with the aim of providing professional users and businesses with information to assist commercial activities in the field of mineral deposits to comply with current legislation and the interests of mining organizations.

In this publication are compiled selected data for the principal mineral resources of the Czech Republic that are, or until recently, were of industrial importance. It contains basic information about the economic viability and the changes in the reserves of mineral resources in the Czech Republic that are taken from the publication "Economic reserves in reserved mineral deposits of the Czech Republic", prepared for restricted circulation within a group of state administrative bodies. The publication contains information about prices of mineral commodities, about their technological characteristics and use, imports and exports, the main mining organizations and about the areal distribution of resources. It provides perspectives on the mineral potential of the Czech Republic and on investment in mining projects.

As the state information system and international collaboration progressively develop, additional statistical data are added, taking into account the comments of readers.

The stated mineral reserves are defined as geological reserves, which means reserves in their original state in the deposits. These are classified according to their economic viability. The data are based on calculations of reserves approved or verified by the Commission for Classification of Reserves of Mineral Deposits and, in some cases, calculations approved by the Commission for Exploration and Exploitation of Reserved Minerals of the former Ministry for Economic Policy and the Ministry of Economy, or the former Commissions for protection of mineral reserves in individual mining and manufacturing concerns. Nowadays the reserves are approved by the Commission for Projects and Final Reports of the Ministry of the Environment or by companies contracting geological works.

The yearbook "Mineral Commodity Summaries of the Czech Republic" includes selected economically essential metalliferous ores, fuels, industrial minerals and building materials for which there are significant volumes of reserves (taking into account the past importance of ores) in the territory of the Czech Republic. The are eleven headings as follows:

Part 1. Characteristics and use - contains basic description of the uses of the commodity, its occurrence in nature, the main minerals and general economics.

Part 2. Mineral Commodity Summaries of the Czech - describes main areas of occurrence, characteristics of mineral deposits, kinds and types of raw materials and potential uses, all in basic detail.

Part 3. Registered mineral deposits and other resources in the Czech Republic - concerns the register of mineral deposits of the Czech Republic and includes a list of deposits and the areal distribution for most of the minerals. Names of operating deposits are written in bold. No individual deposits are denoted for fuels and certain industrial minerals, only the areas of deposits or the relevant sedimentary basins are shown. In the case of deposits of decorative stone and deposits of building material, of which many hundreds are spread all over the territory of the Czech Republic, localities are indicated in terms of the following categories: reserved, non-reserved, operating and inactive deposits.

Part 4. Basic statistical data on the CzR on 31 Dec. of the respective year - is concerned with the economic viability of reserves of reserved mineral deposits. Three groups of mineral commodities in the Czech Republic (ores, energy minerals and reserved deposits of industrial minerals and building materials) are checked for economic viability. In addition, mining at non-reserved deposits has been monitored since 1999.

Part 5. International trade - contains information about imports and exports of dutiable goods related to a certain mineral commodity. Data about international trade are based on the latest (continuously updated) information from the Czech Statistical Office.

Part 6. Prices of minerals - gives the approximate value of domestic production of mineral commodities (net of VAT), and import and export prices.

Part 7. Mining companies on 31 Dec. of the respective year - contains a list of companies involved in the extraction of specific mineral commodities in the territory of the Czech Republic. Companies are listed in the order of the tonnages of minerals extracted. Their addresses are available from the Czech Geological Survey - Geofond.
Information: Dr. Ivo Sitenský, CSc.

Part 8. World production - covers mineral expolitation or production of sales products during the last five years (also countries with a significant proportion in world mining or production - i.e., countries that rank among first five to ten in world production).

Part 9. Prices of commodities in the world market - the course of worldwide prices of mineral commodities during the last five years and prices quoted or reached during trading under present conditions are stated in the summary.

Part 10. Recycling - a brief description of the possibilities for recycling of materials based on worldwide experience.

Part 11. Possible substitutions - contains a commentary and list of possible substitutions for raw materials based on worldwide experience.

For the compilation of the yearbook, information from domestic and foreign magazines and expert literature was used, as well as the latest information available from international statistical surveys.

The yearbook "Mineral Commodity Summaries of the Czech Republic" is available either in printed or electronic form in Czech or English versions and can be ordered through the CGS-Geofond. Older issues in Czech and English versions are also available ...here (or in digital form).
