Maps of landslide areas

The Czech Geological Survey - Geofond, in compliance with the provisions of § 17 of the Act No. 62/1988 Coll., on geological works, as amended, keeps a register of areas with detected landslides and other hazardous slope instabilities. These objects are ranked among the so-called areas with specific geological conditions that may affect the planning of land-use. Landslides also have an effect on the environment. The Czech Geological Survey - Geofond provides information on geological risks to state-administrative bodies, independent bodies, and to the authorities concerned with the technical aspects of planning and control of land-use.

Depictions of slope instabilities on maps are based on the register of landslides, which is a part of the Information System. The register of landslides itself was established in the early 1960s, when areas with a high incidence of slope deformations were surveyed. During the following years, the register was systematically supplemented, updated and modernized. The register of landslides is held in the Department of Risk Factors in Kutná Hora, where registration sheets and some of the relevant documents are also kept. The initial records, including professional assessments and reports are kept in the archive of the CGS - Geofond in Prague. They can be consulted at the study room of CGS-Geofond. The itself is based on these materials. New objects are included in the register only when the reported features of the landslide have been confirmed and the landslide has been precisely located. The description of the landslide must contain certain basic information stipulated by CGS-Geofond on the registration form.. The register does not include features for which no documentation has been received at CGS - Geofond or for which the specified information is not complete. The maps of landslides and other hazardous slope deformations are regularly published and distributed free of charge to state-administrative and independent bodies concerned with planning of land-use.

The individual landslides shown on the maps are classified according to their level of danger as follows:
  • active landslides - property or lives of citizens are put at risk
  • other landslides - potential, stabilized, removed or buried

Assessment of the level of activity is made when thelandslide is registered and when the records are subsequently updated. The actual dimensions of the landslide are shown on the map if at least one dimension exceeds 100 m. Smaller landslides are marked by points.

More detailed information on individual objects can be requested from the Department of Risk Factors in Kutná Hora.
