Definition of Activities
According to paragraph 1, § 17 of the Act No. 62/1988 Coll., on geological works, as amended (further referred to as the "Act"), the "task of the state geological survey is to gather and supply data on the geological structure of the Czech territory and on the protection and utilization of its natural mineral resources and groundwater resources, and on geological hazards".
The key activities of the Czech Geological Survey - Geofond are therefore the collection and storage of the results of geological works, providing access to these results and the related geological documentation and to material evidence collected from the territory of the Czech Republic (see Archive). This information and material is provided by individuals and legal entities under the terms of § 12 of the Act and Decree of the Ministry of the Environment No. 368/2004 Coll., on geological documentation.
To ensure their effective utilization, the Czech Geological Survey - Geofond professionally classifies the material collected into documentary, factographic and thematic databases within the unified national geological information system and maintains its operation (compilation, development, administration, maintenance and updating) under § 2 of the Act No.365/2000 Coll., on information systems of the public administration. These databases are used for scientific purposes, protection and development of mineral resources, environmental management, protection of the rock environment, land-use planning, formulation of national mineral policy, utilization of national mineral resources, focusing and carrying out geological exploration for claimable minerals, granting permits for exploratory works (pre-claim areas) and granting prior consents for definition of claims in the territory of the Czech Republic. The creation and maintenance of the information system is a pre-requisite for performance of other activities including the provision of thematic outputs under the terms of § 17 of the Act and Decision No.10/97 of the Ministry of the Environment.
